Changing your name on a credit card: American Express and others

Every card issuer wants to see the document that changed your name, but not in the same form: a scan for American Express, a certified copy for Virgin Money, and a passport or licence as well at MBNA.

The short answer

Send American Express its Name Change Request Form with a photocopy or scan of your deed poll, marriage certificate or divorce certificate; it then sends new cards. Capital One takes photocopies with a letter. Tesco Bank wants originals or certified copies, Virgin Money a certified copy, and MBNA a passport or licence beside an unenrolled deed poll.

How do I change my name on an American Express card?#

Fill in American Express's Name Change Request Form and send it with a photocopy or scanned image of one document confirming the change: a marriage or civil union certificate, a divorce certificate, or a "deed of name change certificate", such as a deed poll. Upload both to its online Document Centre, choosing Name Change from the drop-down, or post them to American Express Services Europe Limited, 1 John Street, Brighton, East Sussex, BN88 1NH. American Express then sends new cards in your new name.

The form asks for:

  • your previous name and signature, and your new name and signature;
  • the card account number of every active account;
  • your signature on the declaration, in your new name;
  • for a supplementary cardmember, the main cardmember's signature as well.

American Express asks for a copy, not the original, so your deed poll stays at home. Its personal details page lists your billing address, phone numbers, email address and income as the details you can change online; a name goes on the form. It gives no timescale.

Capital One#

Write a covering letter asking Capital One to change your name, giving your account number and your new signature, and enclose photocopies of one of these: your marriage or civil partnership certificate; your deed poll or a statutory declaration; or, after a divorce or dissolution, the decree absolute or dissolution document with your marriage certificate, civil partnership certificate or birth certificate. Send it to Customer Services, Capital One (Europe) Plc, PO Box 4929, Interface Business Park, Royal Wootton Bassett, Swindon, SN4 8QF. Capital One says your new card arrives within 7 to 10 working days of it receiving your documents. Its app changes an address, email or phone number, but a name needs the letter.

Tesco Bank#

Tesco Bank changes a name in writing. Its help asks your letter to include:

  • every Tesco Bank account or card number you hold, so one letter covers them all;
  • confirmation that you want to change your name;
  • your new and old signatures;
  • an original document or certified copy showing the change.

A deed poll can be the original or a certified copy. A marriage certificate must be the one the registrar issued on the day or a certified copy issued by the registrar, and a decree absolute must be the original; if you are going back to your maiden name, add your birth certificate or a certified copy of a new passport or driving licence, because the decree does not usually show it. Tesco Bank scans the document and sends it back the way you sent it, recorded delivery included, which can take up to 10 working days. For a credit card, write to Tesco Bank, PO Box 343, Newcastle Upon Tyne, NE12 2GE. Tesco Bank is now part of the Barclays Group but says it will not automatically share the change with Barclays, so tell Barclays separately if you bank there.

MBNA#

On an iPhone you can change your name in the MBNA app with your driving licence or a UK or EU passport; MBNA says the service is still rolling out and not yet on Android. Otherwise, print the form from Online Services on a computer, under Your profile, Change your contact details, then Change name, and post it to MBNA, Credit Card Operations, The Green Building, Leeds, LS78 1LB.

MBNA's list accepts an enrolled deed poll, though not in Scotland, but says an unenrolled one "can only be accepted with valid driving licence or UK/EU passport in the new name". So change your passport or licence first: HM Passport Office and DVLA explain how. Copies must be certified by a barrister, accountant, lawyer, solicitor or notary public, a list the certified copies we sell are not on. MBNA returns originals, suggests recorded delivery for them, and returns certified copies only if you ask. One change updates your name on all your Lloyds Banking Group accounts, including Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland; Lloyds and Halifax have their own guides.

Virgin Money#

Virgin Money changes the name on a credit card by post. Send a certified copy of the document, such as your marriage certificate or deed poll, with a short covering letter giving the reason, your card number and your signature in your old and new names, to Virgin Money Credit Cards, PO Box 5293, Worthing, BN11 9TL. Virgin Atlantic cards go to PO Box 5294, Worthing, but Virgin Money's help gives two postcodes for it, BN11 9TN and BN11 9TL, so check its credit card contact page first. The certifier must be a professional who is not related to you, living at your address or in a relationship with you. Other Virgin Money products, and any Nationwide account, need telling separately: our Virgin Money guide has the rest.

Sainsbury's Bank#

Sainsbury's Money says certain Sainsbury's Bank credit card, loan and savings accounts have moved to NatWest: the High Court approved the transfer in April 2025, legal ownership passed on 1 May 2025, and Sainsbury's Bank's online banking and app are no longer available. If your card moved, contact NatWest, whose change of details page tells customers whose only NatWest product is a credit card to call the number on the back of the card; it gives no list of documents for them. If you also bank with NatWest, our NatWest guide covers its app and branch routes. If your card did not move, Sainsbury's Money's account support page has a contact form.

Cards from the banks in our guides#

Barclaycard asks for a letter with clear copies of your documents, not the originals, sent to Barclaycard Customer Relations Department, PO Box 9131, 51 Saffron Road, Leicester, LE18 9DE; an Amazon Barclaycard needs a visit to a Barclays branch or Barclays Local with the originals and the card. Changing your name with Barclays has the rest, and changing your name with your bank links every bank guide we have.

Questions people ask

Do I have to change my name on my credit cards after marriage?

None of these issuers' help pages sets a deadline, but a card shows the name the issuer holds: American Express says that once your account has been updated, it can issue a card in your new name. American Express, Capital One, Tesco Bank, MBNA, Virgin Money and Barclaycard all name a marriage certificate as evidence, so a surname taken on marriage needs no deed poll. Changing your name after marriage puts the cards in order with everything else.

Can I change my name on my Amex card online?

Yes, by upload. Complete the Name Change Request Form and upload it, with a scan of your document, to the Document Centre, which needs an American Express online account; it takes PDF, DOC, DOCX, TIF, JPG, EMP and GIF files. The personal details settings in your online account do not change a name.

Will I get a new credit card with my new name?

American Express says it sends new cards automatically and your new name appears on all future cards, and Capital One sends one within 7 to 10 working days of receiving your documents. Tesco Bank, MBNA and Virgin Money do not say on their name change pages whether a new card follows.

How do I change the name on an additional cardholder's card?

At American Express the same form covers a supplementary cardmember, with the main cardmember's signature added. Capital One wants photocopies of the extra cardholder's documents with a covering letter signed by the account holder, sent to its Swindon address.
