Changing your name with Tesco Bank

One letter covers every Tesco Bank product. Barclays runs them now, under the Tesco Bank name, but Tesco Bank still has its own process and does not pass the change on to Barclays.

The short answer

Write to Tesco Bank listing every account and card number, saying you want to change your name, with your old and new signatures and an original or certified copy of your deed poll or certificate. It scans the document and returns it within 10 working days. Tesco Bank is now part of Barclays, so tell Barclays separately.

How do I change my name with Tesco Bank?#

By letter. Tesco Bank's help page says a change of name must be sent "in writing", and asks your letter to include:

  • your account or card number, and every other Tesco Bank product you hold, so one letter covers them all;
  • confirmation that you want to change your name;
  • your new and old signatures;
  • an original document or a certified copy showing the change of name.

Post it to the address for any one of your products; Tesco Bank says you need only one, provided the letter lists them all.

Your product Where to send the letter
A credit card Tesco Bank, PO Box 343, Newcastle Upon Tyne, NE12 2GE
A personal loan Tesco Bank, PO Box 27014, Glasgow, G2 9FE
A savings account Tesco Bank, PO Box 27017, Glasgow, G2 9FH

The Mobile Banking App and Online Banking change your address, phone number and email, not your name. Tesco Bank's pages mention no fee. Its contact page lists the other ways to reach it.

What does Tesco Bank ask to see?#

One document, depending on why your name changed, as the original or a certified copy.

Why your name changed What Tesco Bank asks for
Deed poll The deed poll, the original or a certified copy
Marriage The certificate the registrar issued on the day of the marriage, or a certified copy issued by the registrar
Divorce The original decree absolute
Back to your maiden name after divorce The decree absolute, and your birth certificate or a certified copy of your new passport or driving licence

On a deed poll, Tesco Bank sets no condition beyond that: nothing about enrolment, and no passport or licence in the new name. A deed poll you have signed in front of a witness and kept, as ours are, fits its wording. The page does not say who may certify a copy; if you are unsure, send the original, which Tesco Bank returns. What is a certified copy? explains the usual rules. A marriage certificate is stricter: a certified copy must come from the registrar, not a photocopy someone has signed.

What happens next#

Tesco Bank scans your document and sends it back by the same method you used, so a document sent by recorded delivery comes back by recorded delivery. It says processing and return can take up to 10 working days. If the original deed poll is due at HM Passport Office or DVLA soon, send a certified copy instead, or send the original first and wait for it to come back.

Payments into your account are checked against the name on it under Confirmation of Payee. Tesco Bank says that if your official name has changed, you should contact it so the account matches, and then pass the new name on to anyone who pays you.

Tesco Bank, Barclays and Tesco Insurance#

Tesco Bank's banking business moved to Barclays Bank UK PLC on 1 November 2024, after the High Court approved the transfer on 17 October 2024. Barclays now manages the credit cards, personal loans and savings, and keeps the Tesco Bank name for them. So:

  • Barclays. Tesco Bank says it will not automatically share your details with Barclays, so tell Barclays separately if you bank there. Barclays wants photo ID in your new name for a new first or middle name; Tesco Bank's page has no such rule.
  • Tesco Insurance. Insurance products, travel money, gift cards and ATMs did not move to Barclays. They stayed with Tesco Personal Finance PLC under the Tesco Insurance and Tesco brands, so a policy needs its own change of name: changing your name with your insurer.
  • Clubcard Pay+. Tesco Bank closed Clubcard Pay+ and its Round Up accounts on 26 April 2026 and sent any balance by cheque. If the cheque is in your old name, Tesco Bank asks you to contact it.
  • Your Clubcard. Tesco Bank says Clubcard Pay+ holders keep the Clubcard account that was linked to it; Tesco's own Clubcard help covers that account.

For other card issuers, changing your name on a credit card compares American Express, Capital One, MBNA and others, and changing your name with your bank covers the rest.

Questions people ask

Can I change my name with Tesco Bank online or in the app?

No. Tesco Bank's app and Online Banking change your address, phone number and email for a credit card, loan or savings account, but it asks for a change of name in writing.

Is Tesco Bank part of Barclays now?

Yes. Its banking business moved to Barclays Bank UK PLC on 1 November 2024, and Tesco Bank is now a trading name of Barclays Bank UK PLC. Barclays runs the credit cards, personal loans and savings under the Tesco Bank brand.

Will changing my name with Barclays update Tesco Bank?

Not according to Tesco Bank, which says it will not automatically share your details with Barclays, so the two need separate requests. Barclays' process is a branch appointment or its form by post: changing your name with Barclays.

Does Tesco Bank accept a deed poll I made or bought online?

Its page asks for a "Deed poll certificate", the original or a certified copy, and sets no condition about enrolment or ID in the new name.

My Clubcard Pay+ closing cheque is in my old name. What do I do?

Tesco Bank says a closing cheque can be paid into an account in your name, and asks you to contact it if the name on the cheque is out of date. Clubcard Pay+ closed on 26 April 2026.
