Pressing play loads the video from YouTube's privacy-enhanced player. Nothing is loaded until you do.

1. You apply online, in about five minutes. Your current name, your new name, whether the deed is for you or a child, and the address to post it to. You choose any certified copies, cover letters, the envelope and the Royal Mail service, and pay by card, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay or Klarna. A confirmation arrives by email.
2. A paralegal drafts your deed poll and checks it. The wording is the wording UK organisations recognise, the names are checked letter by letter against what you typed, and the deed is printed on certificate paper with space for your two signatures and two witnesses.
3. It is posted the same working day. With a signing and witnessing guide, a who-to-tell guide and a cover letter template, in the delivery service you chose. Orders placed outside working hours go on the next working day.
4. You sign it at home, in front of two witnesses. You sign in your old name and your new name, date it, and your witnesses sign and add their details. That is the moment your name changes. Nothing is sent back to us and nothing is filed anywhere; the signed deed is the evidence.

Then: telling everyone

The last step is a paperwork job rather than a legal one. HM Passport Office and DVLA want the original deed and post it back; almost everyone else takes a certified copy and keeps it. Who to tell, and in what order has the full list.

What we do not do

• We do not enrol deed polls with the High Court. Enrolment is optional, costs £53.05 and does not make a deed more likely to be accepted: enrolled and unenrolled deed polls.
• We do not draft a child's deed poll without the agreement of everyone who holds parental responsibility, because it would not be valid.
• We do not email deed polls as PDFs. Organisations accept the signed original, or a certified copy of it, not a printout.
