Charities

Charities that can help you change your name

Changing a name is rarely only paperwork. These charities help with what sits around it: leaving an abusive home, transitioning, growing up in care, arriving as a refugee, or starting again after a conviction. Find the right one for you, or for someone you support.

Each page explains what changing your name involves for that group, which charities help with which part, and what to ask them.

Helping someone change their name

A guide for refuge staff, advocates, social workers, care leaver advisers and advice workers: when the free GOV.UK deed poll is enough, keeping a new name and address private, the order to update records, and what banks, DVLA and the passport office ask for. It ends with a checklist to print.

The directory

Every charity, by situation and place

Search by name, place or what you need, or narrow the list by situation and nation. Charities that cover the whole of the UK show under every nation.

Charities that publish their own help on changing your name

Every charity in the directory has a page of its own on what it offers and how to reach it. These are the ones that also publish guidance on changing a name, from free templates to the rules for children, and each page says what that guidance covers.

Cards and a code for the people you support

We give charities and support services their own code for 15% off any order, with business cards, leaflets and a sheet for staff. There is nothing to sign, nobody is asked why they are changing their name, and we share nothing about who uses it.

How it works

How we choose and check the charities

We list registered charities, and a few community interest companies and companies that people in these situations rely on, whose work includes support with a change of name or with what surrounds it. Each entry was checked against the charity's entry on the Charity Commission, OSCR or Charity Commission for Northern Ireland register, and against its own website, on 22 October 2026, and is checked again whenever we update the list.

We link to these charities because they help. None has paid to be listed and none pays us anything. Being listed does not mean a charity recommends Deed Polls Online, and we do not use any charity's name or logo to sell. If an entry is out of date, or you run a charity that should be here, tell us.

You can change your name for free. Anyone aged 16 or over can make their own deed poll using the wording GOV.UK gives, signed in front of witnesses. When a free deed poll is enough, and help paying for one.

If you are in danger now, contact the police. The National Domestic Abuse Helpline is free and open day and night, and its website has a live chat.
