What this site is#
Deed Polls Online has two jobs. The first is the handbook: an answer to every question people ask about changing their name in the UK, organised by situation and by organisation, each one checked against its primary source and dated. The second is the service that has paid for the first since 2000: adult, child and replacement deed polls drafted by paralegals, for £18.50.
We keep the two apart. The answers come first on every page, and where you do not need a deed poll, the page says so. GOV.UK is clear that a marriage certificate is enough to take a spouse's surname, and so are we.
Who we are#
Deed Polls Online is an independent private company. We are not part of His Majesty's Government, the courts or the Royal Courts of Justice, and we are not affiliated with them. We prepare unenrolled deed polls, which are the usual way to change a name in the UK, and we do not enrol deed polls, notarise documents or give legal advice about individual cases.
Our paralegals draft and check every deed poll we send. The handbook is written and maintained by the same team, working from the sources named on each page: GOV.UK and the devolved governments, legislation, and the published guidance of the organisations concerned.
How the handbook is paid for#
By the deed polls we sell. Each page that concerns a deed poll carries one short offer, after the answer. There is no advertising, no sponsored content and no affiliate income, and nobody pays to appear in the organisation guides. Prices on this site are the prices at our checkout, and we check them against it.
What we will always tell you#
- When you do not need us. If a certificate or a court order does the job, the page says so before anything else.
- What the source says, even where it is less convenient than what we would like to say.
- When we got something wrong. Corrections are logged in the open on the corrections page.
- The date. Every page shows when it was last checked and when it last changed.
