Changing your name with Revolut

A few taps in the app and, usually, under an hour. The catch is the document: Revolut asks for government-issued ID.

The short answer

In the Revolut app, tap your profile icon, then Account and Personal details, and tap your name to edit it. Revolut asks for a government-issued ID, such as a passport, and says approval usually takes 15 to 45 minutes. Its pages do not mention a deed poll or a marriage certificate, so change your passport first.

How do I change my name with Revolut?#

In the app, and you start it yourself. Revolut's UK help page for a change of name gives three steps:

  1. Tap your profile icon in the top-left corner.
  2. Select Account, then Personal details.
  3. Tap your name to edit it, and follow the instructions.

Revolut says approval usually takes 15 to 45 minutes but may take longer. One thing stops it: if you are in the middle of an identity verification, you cannot update your name until the verification is complete.

Revolut's pages describe no other route, such as a form or a postal address. If you need help, its support team is in the app's chat, reached from your profile icon, then Chats, then Support, at any hour.

What does Revolut need to see?#

"A government-issued ID", in the words of its change of name page. Its card help puts it slightly differently, as a document proving that the updated name is your legal name, but neither page mentions a deed poll or a marriage certificate. Revolut's help pages do not list the documents it accepts: they say the accepted types are shown in the app, and its guide to uploading a document gives a passport and an identity card as examples. They do not say whether a UK driving licence counts for this.

Its identity pages add rules for the document itself. It must be valid, up to date and not handwritten, and you take a live photo of the original, physical document: Revolut says it cannot accept pictures of copies, scans or device screens.

A deed poll is a deed you sign yourself, not an identity document issued by a government, so, going by Revolut's own pages, it will not do the job alone, whether the change is to your surname or your first name. That sets Revolut apart from Monzo and Starling, app banks that both list a deed poll among the documents they accept.

Change your passport first#

With Revolut, the new passport comes before the bank, and the passport needs something of its own. HM Passport Office asks for your deed poll and one document showing you already use the new name, such as a payslip or a letter from your council; the guidance its staff work from includes a bank statement issued in the last 12 months. So the order runs like this:

  1. Sign the deed poll, then tell your employer, HMRC, your council, or a bank that accepts a deed poll on its own, and keep the first letter or statement that arrives in the new name.
  2. Apply for a new passport with the original deed poll and that document.
  3. When it arrives, edit your name in the Revolut app and photograph the new passport when asked.

If you would rather use a new driving licence, check first that the app lists one, since Revolut's pages do not say. DVLA, when your evidence is a deed poll, asks for one document in the new name issued in the last 12 months and after the deed, or your new UK passport number. Changing your name with HM Passport Office and with DVLA set out each step.

The name on your card#

Revolut prints names within a 20-character limit, spaces included. Other documents have limits of their own: long names and accents. If your full name is longer, it prints your first name and last surname, shortens or drops middle names, reduces your first name to an initial if it must and, as a last resort, prints only your last surname. Accents become plain letters, so Müller appears as Muller, and only Latin characters are printed. You cannot customise the name on a card; Revolut's answer is to change the name on the account.

Revolut's pages do not say whether a card in the new name is posted automatically after the change, so ask in the chat. New physical cards are ordered in the app, from the card icon on the Home screen, and Revolut shows any fee before you confirm the order; virtual cards cost nothing.

Joint accounts, Kids and Teens and your Revtag#

  • Joint accounts. Each holder of a Revolut joint account has a personal Revolut account that has passed identity checks. Revolut publishes nothing on changing a name on a joint account, so ask in the chat once your own name has changed.
  • Kids and Teens accounts. Revolut publishes nothing on changing a child's name. The only correction its page describes is to a child's date of birth, made by sharing their birth certificate in the chat. Changing a child's name covers the deed poll itself.
  • Your Revtag. A Revtag is a username within Revolut, not your legal name. You change it yourself in the app, no more than twice.

For every other bank, changing your name with your bank compares how they work.

Questions people ask

Can I change my name on Revolut with a deed poll?

Not with the deed poll alone, as far as Revolut's pages go. They never mention a deed poll, and the change of name page asks for a government-issued ID. Use the deed poll to change your passport, then show Revolut the new one.

How do I change my name on Revolut after marriage?

Revolut's pages do not mention a marriage certificate either, so get your passport in your married name first. GOV.UK lets you apply with your marriage certificate after the ceremony, or up to three months before it for a post-dated passport. Then edit your name in the app and show the new passport.

Why is my Revolut name change not working?

Revolut's pages point to two causes. You cannot change your name while an identity verification is still in progress, so wait for it to finish and try again. And its identity pages reject a document that is not a type the app accepts, or is handwritten, expired, damaged or hard to read. Otherwise, ask in the chat.

Will Revolut send me a new card in my new name?

Its pages do not say that one is sent automatically, so ask in the chat. You cannot customise the name printed on a card, only change the name on the account. New physical cards are ordered in the app, where Revolut shows any fee before you order; virtual cards are free.
