The short answer

Monzo has no branches, so you change your legal name by chatting to it in the app: tap Help, search "Changing your name" and tap Get in touch. It needs to see ID, such as a deed poll, a marriage certificate, or a driving licence or passport in the new name. A preferred name needs no ID.

How do I change my name with Monzo?#

In the app. Monzo has no branches, and its help page for a change of legal name says to chat to it in the app once you have your ID ready:

  1. Tap Help in the app's menu bar.
  2. Search for "Changing your name".
  3. Tap Get in touch at the bottom of the article.

That chat is where the change is made. Monzo's page gives no form to fill in and no address to post anything to.

What does Monzo need to see?#

"Some form of ID", in Monzo's words, and it gives four examples: a driving licence or passport with your new name on it, a marriage certificate, or a deed poll. As far as its page goes, then, a deed poll is enough on its own. Unlike Barclays, which wants government photo ID in the new name for a new first name, or Revolut, which asks for government ID for any change, Monzo's page draws no line between a new surname and a new first name, and it does not ask for an enrolled deed poll. After a wedding, the marriage certificate does the same job.

Monzo's page does not say in what form it wants to see the document, only that you should have it ready before you start the chat. Nor does it say how a deed poll must be made. HM Passport Office's guidance to its own staff accepts one signed in the old and new names, witnessed by at least one person, with every signature in wet ink, and dated; the ones we draft have space for two witnesses.

Monzo's help pages treat the two separately. Your legal name is the one on your account, and it needs ID to change. A preferred name alone needs none: in the app, tap Help, search for "Changing your preferred name" and follow the instructions. If you change your legal and preferred names together, Monzo asks for the same ID as for a legal name.

The legal name is the one that matters for money coming in. Monzo's page on paying in a cheque by post asks you to check that the name on the cheque matches the legal name on your account, and warns that it may not be able to pay in a cheque with a mistake on it. Transfers are checked too: Monzo's page on Confirmation of Payee explains that the name typed for a payment is compared with the name on the account. Once the change is made, give the new name to your employer and anyone else who pays you.

Where Monzo fits in the order#

Because Monzo's page accepts a deed poll on its own, Monzo can come early, as can Starling, before your passport and driving licence. HM Passport Office asks for your deed poll and one document showing you already use the new name, and the guidance its staff work from includes a bank statement issued within the last 12 months. DVLA, when your evidence is a deed poll, asks for one document showing the new name, such as a UK bank statement issued in the last 12 months, or your new passport number.

A Monzo statement can be that document. Monzo's help page explains how to download statements in the app as a PDF, says all its bank statements are original documents, and adds that it will post one, or provide a stamped and signed copy, if you ask. Changing your name with HM Passport Office and with DVLA set out each step.

Cards, joint accounts and what Monzo does not say#

Monzo's public help pages, which we searched in full on 30 September 2026, do not say how long a change of legal name takes, whether a card in the new name follows, whether the change reaches a joint account, or anything about titles. Ask about each in the same chat. What they do say:

  • Cards. Each person can have only one active card per account at a time.
  • Joint accounts. Both holders get their own card, and each must also have a personal current account, which they keep.
  • Monzo Mobile. Monzo's phone plan takes its details from your main Monzo account and updates automatically when you change your name there.
  • Your address. If you are moving as well, you change your home address yourself in the app, under your name in Settings, confirming it with your PIN, fingerprint or face ID.
  • A child's account. Monzo publishes nothing on changing the name on an Under 16s account. Changing a child's name covers the deed poll itself.

For every other bank, changing your name with your bank compares how they work.

Questions people ask

How long does a Monzo name change take?

Monzo does not say. Its help page describes the change as something it sorts out in the chat once you have your ID ready, and none of its public help pages gives a timescale. Ask in the chat if you need the new name by a particular date.

Can I change the name on my Monzo card?

Monzo's help pages do not say whether a card in your new name is sent after a change of legal name, so ask in the same chat. Because Monzo allows only one active card per person per account, a card in the new name cannot simply be ordered as a second card alongside the first.

How do I change my name on a Monzo joint account?

Monzo's help pages do not cover it. A joint account sits alongside each holder's own current account, which Monzo's joint account terms require, so when you change your legal name in the chat, say that you also hold a joint account and ask whether it will show the new name.

Can I change my title with Monzo?

Monzo's help pages do not mention titles at all, so ask in the chat. A title is not part of your legal name, and GOV.UK says a deed poll cannot change one: can a deed poll change my title?

Can I change my Monzo username?

Monzo's help pages do not mention a username. The two names they describe are your legal name, which needs ID to change, and your preferred name, which does not.
