How quickly can I change my name?#
On the day your deed poll arrives. Your name changes when you sign it in front of your witnesses, and GOV.UK says a signed deed poll can be used straight away as proof of the new name. What takes longer is getting the rest of the world to catch up: one document that shows the new name, and then a passport, for which the quickest route is the 1 week Fast Track service. The 1 day Premium service cannot be used for a change of name.
So the honest answer to "how fast" depends on the deadline. Starting work or telling your bank can happen within days. Flying in the new name takes at least a week after a Fast Track appointment, and in practice longer, because the deed and a document in the new name have to come first.
What can be done today#
- Order the deed poll in working hours on a working day. Ours is drafted, checked and posted the same working day. Tracked delivery (£6.99) usually arrives in one to two working days; when will my deed poll arrive? works out the date for any order day.
- Sign it the day it arrives, in front of two witnesses. That is the moment the name changes.
- Do not enrol it. Enrolment is optional and GOV.UK says it can take several months.
- Order certified copies with the deed, so banks, your employer and others can have one each while the original goes where only an original will do. HM Passport Office and DVLA both want the original. How many certified copies?
The document most people forget#
Before HM Passport Office will issue a passport in the new name, it wants proof that you are already using it. Its guidance to staff says one piece of evidence is enough for a UK application, issued within the last 12 months, and lists what counts: among others, a tax record, an official letter from your employer, a letter from a government department or your council, a bank statement or a utility bill. DVLA asks for one document of the same kind when the evidence of the change is a deed poll.
With a deadline, this is the step to plan, because whichever document arrives first decides when you can apply. Ask your employer for a letter on the day you sign, and tell a utility provider and a bank at once. Choose the bank with care: Lloyds and Santander, checked on 22 October 2026, accept an unenrolled deed poll only alongside a passport or driving licence in the new name, which you will not have yet. Banks compared shows which do not ask for that.
The passport: Fast Track, not Premium#
| Service | Takes a new name? | Earliest appointment | Passport arrives | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | Yes | None needed | Usually within 3 weeks of HM Passport Office receiving your documents | £102 online |
| 1 week Fast Track | Yes | The day after you apply | By courier, 1 week after the appointment | £192 adult, £156.50 child |
| 1 day Premium | No | 2 days after you apply | Collected 4 hours after the appointment | £239.50 |
GOV.UK says Premium is only for renewing an adult passport, and HM Passport Office's guidance adds that the customer must not have changed their personal details. Neither urgent service can be used for a first adult passport, and Premium is not offered for children. Fast Track's week, which HM Passport Office counts as 7 days excluding Sundays and bank holidays, is guaranteed only for a straightforward application; one that needs further checks is processed as a standard application. Appointments can be booked up to three weeks ahead.
GOV.UK also warns not to pay for an urgent service once you have already applied and are waiting: the passport will not come sooner, and each additional application costs a £34.50 admin fee. If you must travel urgently for medical treatment or because someone close to you is seriously ill or has died, GOV.UK says to contact the Passport Adviceline instead.
Your passport application
Apply direct: on GOV.UK or at a Post Office
We make deed polls. We do not fill in, check or send passport applications, and you do not need anyone to. Apply direct with HM Passport Office, or through the Post Office, and do not use any other website or company.
Online, on GOV.UK
Apply, pay and upload your documents with HM Passport Office: £102 for an adult, £66.50 for a child. The 1 week Fast Track is applied for, paid for and booked there too, with the appointment at a passport office.
Change the name on your passport, GOV.UKIn a branch, at the Post Office
Selected branches offer Check & Send, for an extra fee: staff check your application and send it to HM Passport Office for you. Digital Check & Send takes your photo and applies online; with Paper Check & Send you use the paper form, £115.50 for an adult.
Passport Check & Send, Post OfficeNot through any other website, company or agent. Services that offer to fill in your form, check it or find you a Fast Track appointment charge extra for what GOV.UK and the Post Office do themselves, and HM Passport Office has warned about copycat websites that look official and charge a premium. If a web address does not end in gov.uk or postoffice.co.uk, do not give it your passport details or pay it.
If travel is already booked#
GOV.UK says the name on your passport must match the one on your booking, and not to book travel until you have a valid passport. Every route to a new passport takes your old one in. So if a trip is booked in your old name, travel on your old passport and apply when you are back: can I travel on my old passport?. If it is booked in the new name, the new passport has to be in your hand first. The travel checker tests a booked trip.
If you are starting a new job#
The Home Office's guide for employers, updated on 1 October 2026, tells them to check that any difference in names across your documents is explained by supporting evidence, a deed poll being one of its examples. Take the original deed with your passport in the old name to the right to work check. A payslip or an official letter from the new employer then becomes your document in the new name.
If it is a wedding#
Taking your spouse's surname needs no deed poll: the marriage certificate does it. A passport in the married name can be issued up to three months before the ceremony, post-dated so that it cannot be used until the day.
The driving licence#
It is free, by post on form D1 with the original deed, and GOV.UK says you can still drive while you wait. Because DVLA also wants the original, send it there after the passport office has posted the deed back, unless the licence matters more to you than the passport.
The fastest order, step by step#
- Order on a working day, in working hours, with Tracked delivery.
- Sign the deed with your witnesses the day it arrives.
- The same day, ask your employer for a letter and tell a utility provider and a bank, so a document in the new name is on its way.
- Send certified copies to everyone else.
- Once the first document arrives, book a Fast Track appointment, or apply by the standard service if you have three weeks or more to spare.
- When the deed comes back from the passport office, send it to DVLA.
What cannot be hurried#
Enrolment, a court order about a child's name, and DVLA, which publishes no timescale. A child's name also needs the agreement of everyone with parental responsibility before anything else can start: a child's passport in a new name covers what HM Passport Office asks for.
Questions people ask
How long does a name change take in the UK?
The name changes on the day you sign. Updating everything usually takes a couple of months, with the passport the longest single step: how long it takes has the full timeline.
Can I make a deed poll today?
Yes. GOV.UK publishes wording for an adult to make their own deed poll, and says a signed deed can be used straight away as proof of the new name. It needs two witnesses aged 18 or over.
Does an unenrolled deed poll work if I am in a hurry?
Yes, and enrolling it would slow you down: GOV.UK says enrolment can take several months. HM Passport Office's guidance tells its staff to accept an unenrolled deed that meets its conditions.
Can I change my name quickly for my safety?
The process is the same and just as quick. GOV.UK says it is enrolment that puts a public notice of the change in The Gazette; an unenrolled deed poll stays with you. Changing your name after domestic abuse covers the rest.
