What the total includes
Three kinds of cost: the evidence of the change, the documents that have to be reissued in your new name, and anything you choose to add. Everything else, from your bank to HMRC, updates your name for nothing.
- The evidence. A marriage or civil partnership certificate is evidence of a change to your spouse's or partner's surname, and costs nothing more. A deed poll you write yourself from GOV.UK's wording is free too. Ours is £18.50, drafted and checked by a paralegal, and certified copies can only be ordered with a deed we drafted.
- The passport. A change of name means a new passport rather than an amendment, so you pay the normal fee for one: there is no separate name change fee. It is usually the largest cost.
- The rest. DVLA changes the name on a driving licence and a V5C log book free. Banks, pensions, employers, utilities, HMRC and your council charge nothing either, and so do most insurers, though a few charge an admin fee: Admiral £15, and AXA £25 for car or £17 for home insurance if it makes the change for you rather than you making it online.
The prices in the calculator are the checkout's for anything from us, and GOV.UK's published fees, checked in September 2026, for the rest. The cost of changing your name sets out each one with its source.
Ways to spend less
- Apply for the passport online rather than on paper, and use the 1 week Fast Track service only if you are travelling soon: how long a passport in a new name takes helps you judge it.
- Apply for your passport direct, on GOV.UK or at a Post Office. Websites and agents that offer to fill in the form, check it or book a Fast Track appointment charge extra for what GOV.UK and the Post Office do themselves.
- Count your certified copies before you order, so you buy the right pack once: the copies calculator does it in a minute.
- Leave enrolment out unless you have a reason for it: GOV.UK describes it as optional, and it makes a difference only at a few organisations, such as some banks and the Railcard scheme.
- Choose the delivery you need. 2nd Class is £2.99; when will my deed poll arrive? shows whether it is soon enough.
What you never pay
There is no annual fee, renewal or subscription for a deed poll. If a company is taking money from you every month for one, it is not us, and is someone charging me every month for a deed poll? explains what to do.
Questions people ask
How much does it cost to change your name in the UK?
It can cost nothing at all. A deed poll you write yourself, or a marriage certificate, costs nothing, and so does updating your bank, HMRC, your employer and your driving licence. The biggest cost is usually the new passport, £102 online. A deed poll from us with ten certified copies, Tracked delivery and a passport renewed online comes to £142.49.
Does it cost to change your name after marriage?
The change itself costs nothing: your marriage or civil partnership certificate is the evidence, and no deed poll is needed. The cost is a new passport, £102 online or £115.50 on a paper form, and any extra certificates you order, £12.50 each from the General Register Office for a marriage in England or Wales.
How much does it cost to change the name on a passport?
The same as any new passport, because a change of name means a new one: £102 online or £115.50 on a paper form for an adult, £66.50 or £80 for a child, and £192 for an adult by the 1 week Fast Track service. There is no separate name change fee. Passport fees has the detail.
How much does it cost to change the name on a driving licence?
Nothing. DVLA changes the name on a licence free of charge; you pay £17 only if you change the photo at the same time. The vehicle log book (V5C) is usually free too.
Is a deed poll free?
It can be. GOV.UK publishes the wording, and a deed poll you write and sign yourself is valid. Ours is £18.50, drafted and checked by a paralegal, with certified copies available and a guarantee that it will be accepted; a free deed poll sets out the difference.
