Is there a separate fee for changing the name on a passport?#

No. A change of name means a new passport rather than an amendment, and you pay the ordinary fee for it. On GOV.UK's page about changing your name, the online application "costs £102", the same figure its renewal page gives for renewing or replacing a passport, and a paper form is £115.50 either way. The Passport (Fees) Regulations 2022, which set every passport fee in law, charge by the applicant's age, where they live, how they apply, the size of the passport and the service they choose. A change of name is not among them.

What the fee buys is a whole new passport, valid for 10 years for an adult and 5 for a child. GOV.UK says time left on the old one is not added.

How much is a new passport?#

GOV.UK's fees for applying from the UK, in force since April 2026:

Passport Online Paper form
Adult (16 and over), 34 pages £102 £115.50
Adult, 54-page frequent traveller £116 £129.50
Child (under 16), 34 pages £66.50 £80
Child, 54-page frequent traveller £80.50 £94
Anyone born on or before 2 September 1929 Free Free

Applying online is £13.50 cheaper, and GOV.UK says applying by post takes longer.

What if I need the passport quickly?#

  • Standard service: GOV.UK says you'll usually get it within 3 weeks, counted from when HM Passport Office receives your documents.
  • 1 week Fast Track: covers a change of name. £192 for an adult (£206 for 54 pages) and £156.50 for a child (£170.50). The earliest appointment is the day after you apply, and the passport comes by courier a week after the appointment.
  • 1 day Premium: £239.50 (£253.50 for 54 pages), for renewing an adult passport only. HM Passport Office's guidance says this service does not take applications with changed personal details, so a change of name cannot use it.

The urgent fees include a £34.50 booking fee. Moving an appointment is free more than 48 hours ahead; cancelling within 48 hours costs a £34.50 admin fee, and a missed appointment is not refunded. If you have already applied, GOV.UK's advice is not to pay for an urgent passport as well: it will not come sooner, and each additional application costs £34.50.

If a trip is close, travelling on a passport in your old name explains when you can travel first and apply afterwards.

Your passport application

Apply direct: on GOV.UK or at a Post Office

We make deed polls. We do not fill in, check or send passport applications, and you do not need anyone to. Apply direct with HM Passport Office, or through the Post Office, and do not use any other website or company.

Online, on GOV.UK

Apply, pay and upload your documents with HM Passport Office: £102 for an adult, £66.50 for a child. The 1 week Fast Track is applied for, paid for and booked there too, with the appointment at a passport office.

Change the name on your passport, GOV.UK

In a branch, at the Post Office

Selected branches offer Check & Send, for an extra fee: staff check your application and send it to HM Passport Office for you. Digital Check & Send takes your photo and applies online; with Paper Check & Send you use the paper form, £115.50 for an adult.

Passport Check & Send, Post Office

Not through any other website, company or agent. Services that offer to fill in your form, check it or find you a Fast Track appointment charge extra for what GOV.UK and the Post Office do themselves, and HM Passport Office has warned about copycat websites that look official and charge a premium. If a web address does not end in gov.uk or postoffice.co.uk, do not give it your passport details or pay it.

What extras might I pay?#

  • Post Office Check and Send: £16 on top of the passport fee, for Post Office staff to check the application before it goes; the digital version includes the photo. It is free for anyone who qualifies for a free passport.
  • Secure return of documents: your original deed poll and other documents come back free by second class post, or by secure delivery, usually for £5 more.
  • Refunds: GOV.UK says you cannot get one if you cancel the application or are not entitled to a passport.

What if I apply from outside the UK?#

It costs more. For someone who lives outside the UK, the fee regulations set £116.50 for an adult applying online and £75.50 for a child, or £130 and £89 by paper form, with a charge for delivering the passport on top. HM Passport Office's fee guidance says people who live abroad cannot avoid the higher fee by applying in the UK. GOV.UK's overseas passport service gives the forms and prices.

Who gets a free passport?#

A British national born on or before 2 September 1929 gets or renews a standard passport free, with Check and Send and secure delivery free too. They still pay for an urgent service, where the regulations set Fast Track at £90, or for a 54-page passport.

What else does a change of name cost?#

  • A deed poll: nothing if you write your own using GOV.UK's wording, or £18.50 drafted by us. HM Passport Office wants the signed original, and posts it back.
  • A marriage or civil partnership certificate: if yours is lost, HM Passport Office accepts a certified copy from the General Register Office, which costs £12.50, or £38.50 for the priority service, for a marriage in England or Wales. GOV.UK says the copy can be sent straight to HM Passport Office with your application reference.
  • Everything else: most organisations charge nothing, and what a change of name costs adds it all up.

Do passport fees change?#

Yes, usually in April. The fees are set in regulations, and they rose on 11 April 2024, 10 April 2025 and 8 April 2026. Check GOV.UK's passport fees page before you pay.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to change my name on my passport after marriage?

The same as any other change of name: £102 online or £115.50 by paper form for an adult. There is no deed poll to buy, because your marriage or civil partnership certificate is the evidence, including for a double-barrelled name. Changing your name after marriage covers the rest.

Does it cost more to renew my passport in a new name?

No. If your passport is due for renewal anyway, applying in your new name is one application at the same fee as renewing it in your old name, and you do not pay twice.

Is the fee the same in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland?

Yes. The Passport (Fees) Regulations 2022 extend to the whole of the UK, so the same fees apply wherever in the UK you live. Birth and marriage certificates are different: Scotland and Northern Ireland issue their own, through their own services.
