Changing your name with OVO

Your name is one of the details OVO's online account cannot change. Its support team makes the change, and a second name on the bills needs both of you to agree.

The short answer

Contact OVO's support team. Its help page lists your name among the details you cannot change online, and OVO staff on its forum say the team asks for documents, such as a marriage certificate, and checks security details before updating it. A second name on the bills means making that person financially liable, with both of you confirming.

How do I change my name with OVO?#

Contact OVO's support team. OVO's help page on managing your account lists your name, with your address and bank account, among the details you cannot change in your online account. An OVO staff answer on the company's own forum, updated on 2 September 2026, says the same for the OVO app, and that you need to speak to the support team instead.

The same answer explains what follows: OVO needs to confirm the change of name, so it "will ask for some documents", giving a marriage certificate as an example, and after checking a few security details it updates your name. Your new name then appears on your statements and in your online account.

OVO's help centre lists phone, email, SignVideo for British Sign Language users, and letters. Pay As You Go customers can also use online chat, from the green chat icon on OVO's help pages. OVO's pages give no timescale for a change of name and mention no fee.

What does OVO ask to see?#

OVO's help pages do not list the documents. Its staff answer on the forum says the support team will ask for documents to confirm the change, such as a marriage certificate. For a change by deed poll, that means the deed poll. The answer does not say what OVO accepts after a divorce, so ask; what counts as proof of a name change explains which document proves which change.

GOV.UK warns that some energy providers may accept only an enrolled deed poll, and tells you to check with the organisation. OVO publishes no such rule. OVO does not say whether it wants an original or a copy, so ask before you post anything, and keep the original deed poll at home if a copy, scan or photo will do. Will organisations accept a photocopy or a PDF? covers who wants what.

Your own name, or someone else on the account?#

OVO draws three lines, and each has its own route.

What you want What OVO publishes
Change your own name The support team, with documents such as a marriage certificate
Let another person talk to OVO about the account Email or call with their full name, date of birth and contact details
Put another person's name on the bills Make them financially liable, by phone, with both of you confirming
Take over the energy in a new home A new account in your name
Take over the account after a death OVO's bereavement form, phone line or email

Adding someone to the account lets them contact OVO and discuss most aspects of it. Adding someone to the bills is different: OVO says they must be made financially liable for the account, which it arranges by phone, Monday to Friday, and it needs spoken confirmation from both of you, so they must be with you on the call.

Moving into a home OVO supplies#

Your current OVO plan cannot come with you to a new address, even if OVO already supplies the new home: you close the old account and open a new one. If you pay monthly and OVO supplies your new home, set up the account through OVO's home move page. OVO asks for the date you moved in, meter readings from that date if possible, your full name, your date of birth, the full address and postcode, a phone number, your email address and your Direct Debit details.

On Pay As You Go, get in touch by online chat or phone after you move, with the date you moved in, your meter readings and your new address. OVO sends a welcome pack and asks you to throw away any top-up keys or cards that previous residents left behind.

The account of someone who has died#

OVO's bereavement page has an online form, a dedicated team you can call, and an email address. OVO asks for:

  • your name and contact details, including your phone number and address;
  • what you know of the account holder's details, such as their full name, postcode or date of birth;
  • contact details for the executor, or for the person taking over the energy account if that is not you;
  • meter readings from the home, if you can get them.

OVO keeps supplying the property unless told otherwise. It then either transfers the account into a spouse's or partner's name, closes it if the estate is no longer responsible for the property, or keeps it running in the name of "The Executors of" the person who died. Statements continue until the property is sold or the keys are returned; OVO says it does not expect you to pay these personally, as they are usually settled from the estate, for example after the grant of probate. Once you give the date and final readings, OVO sends a final statement within 4 weeks of closing the account. If the account is more than £599 in credit, it asks for a photo of the meter reading.

If something goes wrong#

Complain to OVO first, through its complaints page. Ofgem says an energy supplier must try to resolve a complaint within 8 weeks, and that you can go to the Energy Ombudsman after that, or sooner if the supplier sends a deadlock letter. What to do if an organisation refuses your deed poll has the steps that usually settle it before then.

Questions people ask

Can I change my name in the OVO app?

No. OVO's help page lists your name, address and bank account as details you cannot change in your online account, and OVO staff on its forum say the same applies to the app. Your email address, password, phone number and marketing preferences can be changed under Profile.

Does OVO need my deed poll?

OVO staff on its forum say the support team asks for documents to confirm the change, and give a marriage certificate as an example. For a change by deed poll, the deed poll is the document that shows it, so have it ready when you contact OVO.

How do I put my partner's name on our OVO bills?

They have to be made financially liable for the account. OVO's help page says this is done by phone, Monday to Friday, with both of you on the call, as it needs spoken confirmation from each of you.

Can I transfer an OVO account into my name after a death?

Yes, if you are taking over the energy at the home. OVO's bereavement page says it can transfer the account into a spouse's or partner's name, and its online form lets you ask for the account to be moved into your name.
