Make your list for DVLA

Send form D1, from most Post Offices (D2 for a lorry or bus licence), to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BN (SA99 1BR for D2), with your licence and the original deed poll or certificate, not a copy. With a deed poll, add one document in the new name or your new UK passport number. It is free; a new photo is £17. Changing your name with DVLA has the detail.

The order: passport first, usually

DVLA and HM Passport Office both want the original deed poll, and each posts it back, so they go one at a time. Most people send the passport application first, because it takes longer, and because the new passport's number then serves as the extra document DVLA asks for with a deed poll. You can keep driving while DVLA has your licence. When will my new passport arrive? puts dates on the passport.

The extra document, with a deed poll

GOV.UK asks anyone using a deed poll or a statutory declaration for one document showing the new name, issued in the last 12 months: a letter from HMRC, your employer, a school, a government department or your council, a UK bank statement, a child benefit record, or a utility bill, including a mobile phone, broadband or streaming bill. Your UK passport number does the same job, and so does a non-GB driving licence, a non-UK passport or a national identity card issued after your deed poll. The rule does not apply to a marriage or civil partnership certificate.

Changing your name with DVLA has everything else, including titles and Northern Ireland.

Questions people ask

Can I change the name on my driving licence online?

No. GOV.UK sets out a change of name as a postal application: form D1, from most Post Offices, sent to DVLA with your licence and the original documents confirming your new name.

Can I send a certified copy of my deed poll to DVLA?

No. GOV.UK says not to send photocopies, and a certified copy is a copy, so send the original deed. DVLA posts your documents back separately from the new licence.

How much does it cost to change the name on a driving licence?

Nothing. Changing your photo at the same time is £17, with no fee if you are over 70, and if your old licence is lost, stolen or destroyed you include £20.

Can I drive while I wait for the new licence?

Yes. GOV.UK says you can still drive while you wait for your new licence.

Do I need to change my log book too?

Yes, if a vehicle is registered to you. GOV.UK says you must update your V5C registration certificate when you change your name; it is a separate application, using the log book itself, and it is free.
