Changing your name with Yorkshire Building Society

No form to download and no online route, but a clear list. With an ordinary deed poll, Yorkshire wants a passport or driving licence that already shows your new name.

The short answer

Yorkshire Building Society changes a name in a branch or agency, or when you call it; its online account changes only your address, email and phone. Its list accepts a marriage certificate, an enrolled deed poll, a passport or a driving licence. An unenrolled deed poll counts only with a passport or driving licence showing the new name.

How do I change my name with Yorkshire Building Society?#

In a branch or agency, or by calling Yorkshire. It publishes no change of name page or form: its personal details help links to a security page, which says the online account and app change your address, email address and phone numbers, and that for "any other personal or security details" you should call. Its contact page has the number and opening hours, and the branch finder lists branches and agencies.

What Yorkshire does publish is the list of documents it accepts for a change of name, in its identity leaflet. Take one of them with you, or have it ready when you call. Yorkshire's pages mention no fee and give no time for the change.

What does Yorkshire ask to see?#

One document from this list, except after a divorce or the end of a civil partnership, when it wants two.

Your change What Yorkshire asks for
A new surname after marriage or civil partnership The marriage or civil partnership certificate
A new name by deed poll, enrolled The enrolled deed poll
A new name by deed poll, unenrolled The deed poll "along with driving licence or passport showing the new name"
A new name by statutory declaration One "signed by a solicitor or notary"
Any change, once your ID is updated A driving licence or passport
Back to your former name after divorce The decree absolute for a divorce before 6 April 2022, the final order after it, and your birth or marriage certificate
Back to your former name when a civil partnership ends The final order, and your birth or marriage certificate

A passport or driving licence is on the list by itself. So once either shows your new name, Yorkshire needs nothing else, and the deed poll stays at home.

An unenrolled deed poll needs a passport or licence first#

The deed polls most people have, including the ones we draft, are unenrolled: signed in front of a witness and kept, with nothing filed at court. Yorkshire accepts one only with a driving licence or passport that already shows the new name. In practice, change your passport or licence first.

Each needs evidence of its own. HM Passport Office wants proof that you already use the new name, such as a payslip or a letter from your council. DVLA, with a deed poll, wants one document in the new name issued in the last 12 months, such as an HMRC letter or a UK bank statement. So tell your employer, HMRC, your council, or a bank that accepts a deed poll on its own first. HM Passport Office and DVLA have the steps.

Enrolling the deed poll is the other way onto Yorkshire's list. GOV.UK says it costs £53.05, is open to people aged 18 or over, and can take several months, so a new licence or passport usually comes sooner. Enrolled and unenrolled deed polls compares the two.

Sending documents by post#

Yorkshire's leaflet says documents can go to a branch or agency, where it needs to see originals, or by post to Customer Service Centre, Yorkshire Building Society, Bradford BD5 8LJ. By post:

  • send photocopies, never photographs or screenshots;
  • never post the original of anything with a photo or signature on it, such as a passport or driving licence; photocopy it;
  • other originals, such as a certificate or deed poll, are returned to you.

Yorkshire does not ask for certified copies in the leaflet. It does say documents from any YBS Group brand cannot be used as ID, and that if a letter from Yorkshire asks for something slightly different, you should send what the letter asks for.

Chelsea, Norwich & Peterborough and Accord#

Chelsea Building Society and Norwich & Peterborough are trading names of Yorkshire Building Society, and Accord Mortgages is part of the same group.

  • Chelsea. Its own identity leaflet has the same change of name list, word for word on the deed poll. Its identity page gives a postal address of Customer Service Centre, Chelsea Building Society, Yorkshire House, Yorkshire Drive, Bradford, BD5 8LJ, and says you can take documents to a Yorkshire branch or agency.
  • Norwich & Peterborough. Its website now points customers to Yorkshire, and N&P commercial mortgages are run through YBS Commercial Mortgages.
  • Accord Mortgages. Accord's pages set out no change of name process. Its contact page asks for supporting documents to be posted to Accord Mortgages, Yorkshire Building Society, Yorkshire House, Yorkshire Drive, Bradford, BD5 8LJ, so ask Accord first what it needs.

Changing the names on a mortgage#

A new name on a Yorkshire mortgage follows the same rules. Changing who is on the mortgage, for example putting your husband or wife on it after you marry, is a transfer of equity: you appoint a conveyancer, anyone keeping the mortgage alone must show they can afford it, and Yorkshire's tariff of charges lists a change of parties administration fee of £180. The property's title is separate: changing your name with HM Land Registry. For other banks, changing your name with your bank compares how they work.

Questions people ask

Can I change my name with Yorkshire Building Society online or in the app?

No. Yorkshire says its online account updates your address, email address and phone numbers, and that for any other personal details you should call it. A branch or agency is the other route.

Does Yorkshire Building Society have a change of name form?

Not one it publishes. Its help pages send you to a branch or agency, or to a call, and its identity leaflet lists the documents it accepts. Ask in the branch or on the call whether a form is needed for your accounts.

Can I change my name at Yorkshire after marriage?

Yes, with your marriage or civil partnership certificate, which is on Yorkshire's list by itself. Changing your name after marriage covers the other organisations to tell.

Is Chelsea Building Society the same as Yorkshire Building Society?

Yes. Chelsea Building Society and Norwich & Peterborough are trading names of Yorkshire Building Society, and Chelsea's identity leaflet has the same change of name list. Chelsea customers can use a Yorkshire branch or agency.
