How do I change my name with Three?#

On a pay monthly account, by post. Three's help page says that if you need to change the name on your account because you have married, divorced or changed your name by deed poll, you write to it with proof of the change. Send a covering letter asking Three to change your name, which its page reminds you to include, and a copy of one document from the list below, to:

Three Customer Services, PO Box 333, Glasgow, G2 9AG.

Three does not say what else the letter should contain. Your old and new names, your Three mobile number and your account number let it find the account; what to put in a change of name letter covers the rest, and every deed poll we draft comes with a cover letter template.

What Three asks for#

One of these, and Three stresses that it needs only one:

Why your name changed What Three asks for
Deed poll A copy of your deed poll
Marriage or civil partnership A copy of your marriage or civil partnership certificate or, if you do not have one, a copy of your passport and a recent utility bill
Divorce, going back to your maiden name A copy of the decree absolute

Two things stand out. Three asks for copies, so keep your original deed for the organisations that insist on seeing it, HM Passport Office and DVLA among them, as will organisations accept a photocopy or a PDF? explains. And the passport-and-bill alternative after marriage is Three's own: none of EE, Vodafone or O2 lists it, and EE says a passport or a utility bill on its own is not proof of a change after marriage.

For a divorce, going back to your maiden name after divorce explains when the decree absolute is enough and when a deed poll does the job instead.

Pay as you go#

Three's pay as you go help works differently. It says that if you need to change your title, name, date of birth or email address, you get in touch with Three and it will update your account details. That page lists no document and no postal address. Three's contact page offers Live Chat, which is where the pay as you go page points you if you are stuck.

Business accounts#

Three's business help gives the same process as for pay monthly: proof of the name change from the same list, with a covering letter, sent to the same Glasgow address.

Handing the account to someone else#

A new name for you is not a new owner. Three's page puts changing the named owner of the account among the things to contact it about, and publishes no conditions for doing so.

Changing your address too#

Your address is changed online, in the Three app (Account, then My details) or in My3, but only once your account has been open for at least 30 days. Only the name needs the letter.

If you are with Vodafone as well#

Three and Vodafone both now belong to VodafoneThree, but they keep separate accounts. Vodafone's page for customers moving from Three says the two sets of bills stay separate, and that anyone with products from both must update their payment details on each account separately. Tell each of them: changing your name with Vodafone is an online form with an upload, quite different from Three's letter.

What happens next#

Three's pages do not say how long the change takes, whether it confirms it, or whether anything else on your account, such as your plan or your Direct Debit, changes with the name. If your next bill still shows your old name, contact Three.

Once it has changed, that bill is worth keeping. When a deed poll is your evidence for a new driving licence, GOV.UK asks for one document in the new name issued in the last 12 months, and it lists a mobile phone bill among them (changing your name with DVLA).

For other phone, broadband and energy companies, energy, water, phone and broadband compares what each one asks for.

Questions people ask

How do I change my name with Three after marriage?

On pay monthly, post a copy of your marriage or civil partnership certificate to Three Customer Services, PO Box 333, Glasgow, G2 9AG, with a covering letter asking for the change. The certificate is good evidence because it shows the names you both had on the day.

Can I change the name on my Three mobile contract?

Yes, if the contract stays yours: the letter and document update the name on your account. Making someone else the named owner of the account is a different request, and Three asks you to contact it for that.

Can I change my name with Three online or in the app?

Not on pay monthly. The Three app and My3 change your address and contact number, but Three's help page sends a change of name by post. On pay as you go, you get in touch instead, and Three's page points you to its Live Chat.

Does Three need an enrolled deed poll?

Its page asks for "a copy of a Deed Poll", with no mention of enrolment. GOV.UK warns that some mobile phone companies may accept only an enrolled deed poll; enrolled and unenrolled deed polls explains the difference.
