How do I change my name with Chase?#
In the app. Chase UK's help page for a change of legal name gives three steps:
- Open Profile, then Personal details.
- Tap Edit next to your name.
- Chase takes you to a chat. Tap the paper clip icon to upload your documents, with a short message.
Chase's page on contact details describes a second way into the same conversation: in the app's Support section, search "change name", scroll to the Contact us option and choose a call or a chat. Chase's contact page says its team is there 24 hours a day, including holidays.
Chase says it will let you know once it has updated your details and sent you a new card. Its pages give no timescale for the change.
What does Chase ask for?#
"One or more" documents from its list, and Chase adds that "sometimes, we'll require two or three". The list:
- a marriage certificate or a civil partnership certificate;
- a driving licence, a valid signed passport showing the signature page, or an EU national identity card;
- a deed poll "stamped as enrolled by the High Court";
- a decree absolute, with another document if it does not show your maiden name;
- a birth certificate and a decree absolute, if you are going back to your maiden name;
- a birth certificate, a marriage certificate and your partner's death certificate, if you are going back to your maiden name after your partner has died.
A US tax resident also sends a W-9 form. Chase's page draws no line between a new surname and a new first name, and it describes uploads in the chat, not originals or certified copies by post.
An ordinary deed poll: the passport or licence first#
The deed poll on Chase's list is one enrolled with the High Court. The deed polls most people have, including the ones we draft, are unenrolled: signed in front of a witness and kept, with nothing filed at court. HM Passport Office tells its staff to accept those, but Chase's list does not include one. It does include a driving licence and a passport, so the practical route is to change one of those first and upload it.
Each of those needs something of its own. HM Passport Office asks for your deed poll and one document showing you already use the new name, and the guidance its staff work from includes a bank statement issued in the last 12 months. DVLA, when your evidence is a deed poll, asks for one document in the new name issued in the last 12 months and after the deed, or your new UK passport number. So the order runs like this:
- Sign the deed poll, then tell your employer, HMRC, your council, or a bank that accepts a deed poll on its own, and keep the first letter or statement that arrives in the new name.
- Apply for a new passport or a new driving licence with the original deed poll and that document. Chase lists both.
- When it arrives, upload it in the Chase app's chat, with the deed poll too if Chase asks for a second document.
Enrolment is the other way onto Chase's list. GOV.UK says it costs £53.05, that you must be 18 or over to apply for your own, and that it can take several months; enrolled and unenrolled deed polls compares the two.
Your card, statements and payments#
- Your card. Chase sends a new card once your details are updated, unless you have not used your physical card in the last 6 months, in which case it does not send one automatically. Its card pages say a physical card can be ordered from the app. The name page does not mention the Chase credit card separately, so ask about it in the same chat.
- Statements. Chase issues statements and certain documents only in your legal name. Monthly statements appear in the app on the 2nd of each month, or the 3rd for a credit card, as PDFs you can print, and a paper copy can be requested through Support.
- Joint accounts. Chase does not offer them, so the change covers accounts in your name alone.
- Money coming in. Other banks check a payer's details against your account under Confirmation of Payee, and Chase asks you to give payers your full and correct details, so pass on the new name once it has changed. Chase's account terms also ask you to tell it within 30 days when information you have given it changes.
For every other bank, changing your name with your bank compares how they work.
Questions people ask
How do I change my name on Chase after marriage?
In the app, open Profile, then Personal details, tap Edit next to your name, and upload your marriage certificate in the chat that opens. A civil partnership certificate works the same way. Chase says it sometimes needs two or three documents, so keep your passport or driving licence to hand. Changing your name after marriage covers the rest.
Does Chase accept a deed poll?
Only one "stamped as enrolled by the High Court", going by its list. An unenrolled deed poll, the kind you sign and keep, is not on it, so change your passport or driving licence first and upload that instead.
Can Chase call me by a different name without a legal change?
Yes. Chase will use a chosen name in the app and in its calls and messages: in the app's Support section, search "preferred name" and use the Contact us option to call or message. Its page mentions no documents for this, but says statements and certain documents can only be issued in your legal name.
Is this the same as changing my name with Chase in the US?
No. Chase UK is a trading name of J.P. Morgan Europe Limited, with its own help pages at chase.co.uk, and its contact page sends customers who bank with Chase in the US to the American site. Everything on this page comes from Chase UK.
